Paddleboarding

Velden surrounds the western end of Lake Wörthersee and is a popular and trendy SUP spot in summer. As beautiful as it is here, there are unfortunately not many options for varied routes, as the shore is largely built up, so there are only a few public water access points. Most water accesses are on private properties and at accommodation providers. You will look in vain for channels, drains or inflows near the lake, such as in the eastern bay (Klagenfurt). A tour along the shore and across the lake is of course a good idea. The bay between Velden and Schiefling is highly recommended. Lake Forstsee to the north can provide some paddling variety.

Swimming

With water temperatures of up to 28° C, Lake Wörthersee is probably the most popular bathtub in the state. That's why it's very heavily built up, but also has a number of free lake accesses. The Metnitz Beach in Klagenfurt, the Edelweis outdoor pools in Pörtschach, the Teixlbucht Bay near Maria Wörth and the free accesses to the lake in Krumpendorf (Kurpark, Berthastraße, Strandweg among others) are worth mentioning. However, if you are looking for more infrastructure, you are spoiled for choice with the countless bathing beaches around the lake. In Velden you find the following:

Winter swimmersr always find like-minded people in Velden, when on the first day of the year the traditional New Year's Swim takes place in the area of Villa Bulfon.

Worth seeing

The Schloss Velden was gradually converted from a manor house into a castle from the end of the 16th century. It has been a hotel since the 20th century and is known far beyond Austria's borders as the Schlosshotel Velden, which has served as a film location time and again since the 1950ies.

In Velden's central park - the Kurpark Velden - you can relax on the lawn when the weather is nice and admire the colorful flowerbeds. The children's playground also offers an entertaining diversion for the little ones, while adults find a good water access to start a SUP tour.

The 19th century Villa Helene is not open to the public, but offers a beautiful view even from the street.

Mt. Pyramidenkogel with its 100 m high observation tower, watches over Lake Wörthersee, the Klagenfurt Basin and the Rosental Valley. From the world's highest wooden observation tower you can get back down using the elevator or Europe's highest building slide (52 m high).

Extra Tips

The dreamy Lake Forstsee is located a little to the north between Velden and Saag. There you find wonderful natural bathing spots in the seclusion of the surrounding forest. The lake is no longer an insider tip for nudists, but a nudist hotspot.

If you want to spend an entertaining evening after a day by the water, the Casino Velden is the place to be. The restaurant and bar provide food and drink, the poker and roulette tables as well as regular events provide entertainment.

From spring to autumn you can take a leisurely cruise across the lake on the ships of the Wörthersee Shipping Company  and enjoy various themed trips. The four ships visit the ten piers on the lake at regular intervals and also offer breakfast on board.

The Bluesiana Rock Cafe has been a well known venue when it comes to live music for several decades. Rock, blues, jazz and soul are all popular in the iconic basement bar, and a concert is the perfect way to round off a day by the water.

The Fête Blanche takes place every summer in Velden and Saag. All night long, dressed exclusively in white, party animals celebrate in various locations and clubs around Lake Wörthersee. It is probably the biggest party in Carinthia.

Sports fans get their money's worth at the two major running events at lake Wörthersee. Besides the Ironman also the event Kärnten Läuft attracts top athletes and thousands of spectators every year and ensures an entertaining supporting program.
