General information

Paddleboarding

Despite alpine conditions, this region is also great to paddle on small lakes and some rivers. The lakes include primarily the Hintersteiner See, Lake Pillersee and Lake Walchsee. The rivers Inn and the Tiroler Ache on the other hand, are interesting for white water paddlers. All of these paddling areas live, among other things, from their impressive surroundings.

Swimming

As everywhere in Tyrol, this region is best known for its mountains. However, you will also find some excellent outdoor bathing opportunities. The water temperatures in the lakes are naturally a bit cooler due to the alpine location, but this in no way diminishes the bathing experience. In midsummer, the water temperatures usually only slightly exceed 20°C, but you can enjoy wonderful views of the surrounding mountain scenery from all the lakes.

If the conditions are too uncomfortable for outdoor bathing, you can also visit one of the countless indoor pools and thermal baths:

Worth seeing

The town of Kitzbühel is of course well known to winter sports fans, but the posh resort is also worth seeing in summer. Even in summer a lot revolves around the annual major event of the Alpine Ski World Cup - the Hahnenkamm Race. Apart from that, the town also scores thanks to the unique alpine architecture, the countless hiking opportunities and, of course, thanks to the courteous hospitality.

The cheese factory Wilder Kaiser is the ideal place to go if you want to learn more about local cheese production and stock up on delicious cheese. In addition to film screenings and tastings, you can also experience Tyrolean conviviality in the ancient farmhouse.

On the summit of Mt. Buchensteinwand stands the Jakobskreuz summit cross, the largest accessible summit cross in the world, where seminars and other events also take place. If you don't want to hike up there, just take the cable car to get to the cross.

Essential plant oils have been distilled in the Josef Mack pine oil distillery since the middle of the 19th century. This makes it the oldest distillery of its kind in the world. In addition to high-quality health, beauty and fitness products, which can be purchased on site or online, an informative tour of the distillery is also possible.

On Mt. Steinplatte near Waidring you can visit a dripstone cave for free all year round. It is located in the Triassic Park, which is also accessible free of charge. You only pay for the gondola ride up.

St. Johann is always worth a visit. The cute town center invites you to stroll, take photos and linger. In addition, the town and the region offer many great leisure activities for all seasons.

Since 2014, the Stoabeatz Festival has been held at Lake Walchsee every year in June. The small one-day festival is packed with music, good mood and a lively after-show party.
