General information

Paddleboarding

You'll find many opportunities for SUP adventures around Novigrad. You have the choice between sea and bay and between canal and river. If you like paddling by the sea, the partly nested banks north and south of town offer enough space as well as larger and smaller bays. From Novigrad's banks you can also paddle towards the river Mirna and eastwards along its regulated channel until the river current makes progress impossible. Or you paddle the Mirna downstream the classic way by setting out at any point inland.

Swimming

There are seven beaches, all in the town's area and many of them with good infrastructure. To the north, the nearby bathing resorts of Mareda and Dajla complete the choice. The average water temperature is impressive all year round: in summer it is 22 – 24° C, in late autumn and spring it is still around 18° C. Even the coldest months still measure around 10° C, which means you could also dare to cool down after a winter paddling tour, as long as the notorious fall winds (Bora) don't trigger storms.

There is also a great aqua park outside of town called Istralandia, which impresses with an unbelievable number of attractions.

Worth seeing

The old town with its narrow streets and colorful house facades is located on a peninsula which was only connected to the mainland in the 18th century. The foundation walls of the town center date back to the seventh century and come from various previous settlements. If you stroll aimlessly through the small town, you will inevitably come across the hanging colorful umbrellas, the still stable town walls, the picturesque window arches of the town's loggia called Belvedere and the bell tower of the parish church of St. Pelagius.

You can climb up the bell tower during summer months and be enchanted by the view. And while you're here, you should also visit the parish church as well as the Lapidarium. The entire small town looks like an open-air museum.

During the tour along the old city port of Mandrac, a visit to the Gallerion Museum, which was founded in 2007, is a good idea. The small museum gives an insight into Croatian seafaring with its Austro-Hungarian history.

The small inland town of Buje is worth a visit. A signposted circular route leads through the narrow, winding old town, which is enthroned on a hilltop. From the fourth floor of the San Martino Tower you can enjoy a phenomenal panoramic view as far as the sea and shortly afterward stop at the viewpoint, which is also recommended. The tower of the Church of St. Servul can also be climbed, it is even the second-highest bell tower in Istria.

Extra Tips

The region around Novigrad is also known, among other things, for wine growing and its truffles. In the course of a wine tasting you can get to know the nearby Pervino winery. A day trip to the truffle region in the hinterland leaves just as deep impressions on your taste buds as a truffle hunting adventure does.

In the spacious Aquapark Istralandia, just minutes outside of town, there's plenty of water fun to be had with family or friends. Opening hours run from May to September.

At the various festivals music fans get to listen to many different genres: Blues lovers head to the Cittanova Blues Festival, the concerts of the Istria Folk Fest bring folklore to town throughout the summer, while Live @Jazz corner connects people to jazz music.

Inland, not far from Novigrad, the Škarline Nature Park with its gorges, waterfalls and jungle flair is waiting to be explored. The waterfalls near Buzet in the middle of the truffle region and the Butori Waterfall are also ideal for day trips. However, the Trail of the 7 Waterfalls near Buzet is only suitable for experienced and sure-footed hikers.

Novigrad and its surroundings boast an excellent network of cycle paths. Especially to the north, you can enjoy relaxing bike rides along the coast to the town of Umag.

A visit to the horse ranch Mare is particularly exciting for children. Here they can learn to ride in a relaxed atmosphere or ride along the sea. The offer is of course also available for adults.

THE SUP WEEK offers a week full of adventures on the Croatian sea, with dreamy SUP-Faris in the middle of beautiful islands, breathtaking sunsets, trips to beautiful port towns and secluded bays. Contact us and request your personal discount voucher of 5% on your next booking!
