General information Budapest

Paddleboarding

In and around Budapest, the Danube and its tributaries show their multifaceted existence. You can paddle along the main river, which is particularly busy in the city center, as well as along the more dreamy side arms of the Ráckeve-Danube and Szentendrei-Danube. The flow rate is quite comfortable on all three arms of this huge river, except after heavier and longer-lasting rains.

Swimming

The Danube is generally not blessed with clear water, we also advise against anyone getting into the water in the city center. Traffic is just too heavy, even light flow rates can quickly become a serious problem for unfit swimmers. However, in 2021 the SHO Beach opened the only lido on the Danube in Lágymányosi Bay. In addition to sports activities and entertainment, it also offers great gastronomy.

However, the population of Budapest primarily loves bathing in the countless public baths and spas. No other capital in the world has as many healing springs and spas as Budapest and its suburbs.

The highlights include the Lukács thermal bath, the Gellert Spa as well as the Széchenyi Bath, which ensure relaxing hours in the water even on rainy days.

Worth seeing

The castle hill is not only known for its Castle District, but also for its huge Buda Castle. It houses the impressive National Library, the National Gallery as well as the Historical Museum.

The parliament building was the largest in the world when it was completed in 1902 and with its 691 rooms and 10 courtyards it has lost none of its splendor and appeal over the decades. It can be visited all year round.

When the Chain Bridge opened in 1849 it was the longest suspension bridge in Europe and the first of a total of nine bridges that connect both banks of the Danube. Actually, the provincial towns of Buda and Pest were only able to grow into a common metropolis called Budapest after the bridge was built.

The breathtaking Fishermen's Bastion has been standing on the spot where there was once a fish market during the Middle Ages. From here you can enjoy a wonderful all-round view, especially when the weather is nice. But the inside is also worth seeing. You only pay a small entrance fee for the upper towers or you take part in a guided tour through the entire Castle District by day or at night anyway.

The Great Market Hall (Nagy Vásárcsarnok) not only impresses with its wide range of food of all kinds, but also with its architecture. When you enter the building and step into the huge market hall, you feel transported back a hundred years.

Extra Tips

The metro line M1 has existed since 1896, making it one of the oldest subway lines in the world and an UNESCO world heritage site. A historic ride pays off.

The city can also be exolored by a sightseeing bus as well as by the water. Different providers offer a comprehensive range of land and water tours on a wide variety of conditions. For example, with the Hop-on/Hop-off Bus you can explore the city flexibly and inexpensively, with guided city tours and river cruises even being included.

Budapest and its suburbs also offer a lot of other big and small markets and everyone has its own flair.

The City Park Városliget was laid out around the year 1810 and offers a unique local recreation area of 1.2 km² in the 14th district. What was once a swampy hilly landscape now offers visitors a range of recreational and cultural facilities.

The  Sziget-Festival is one of the largest festivals in Europe, attracting hundreds of thousands of music fans to Óbudai-sziget (Old Buda Island) every year. The line-up is always top-class and the colorful mix of different music styles creates an incredible variety. You can book your festival ticket online.

The Budapest Zoo, which was founded in 1866, you can easily spend a whole day when the weather is nice. Because it is so extensive and visiting it takes time, you will find snack bars and sufficient seating everywhere on the site. Every last Sunday in May is also Children's Day there's a lot going on at the zoo. With the Budapest Card you get a 25% discount on day admission.
