Paddleboarding

Lake Faak has been the venue for The Lake Rocks SUP Festival since 2022 and for that reason alone it is predestined as a SUP spot. This event could be seen as the lake's accolade in terms of stand up paddling. In addition to dreamy bays with Caribbean water colors, the winding waterway through the reed belt and the wonderful panoramic view of the neighboring mountains, the lake also scores with a great culinary offering and accommodations for every taste.

Since the lake is privately owned, paddlers must obtain a paid daily permit (May - October) , but it is already covered when renting a SUP on site. On the other hand, the beautiful scenery on and around the lake is worth spending a few euros on paddling.

Anyone who has explored Lake Faak sufficiently will find other interesting paddling areas in the surroundings. The rivers Drave and Gail, as well as Lake Ossiach are highly recommended.

Swimming

The lake and its surroundings are a true holiday paradise, water temperatures up to 28°C and turquoise coastal strips are guaranteed to give you a Caribbean feeling. In winter the lake usually cools down to 2°C. If you don't go ice swimming, you can at least paddle due to the lack of ice.

Worth seeing

The town of Villach is located just a few kilometers from Lake Faak and invites you to its cute town center. No matter whether you want to explore historical sights or just enjoy the cozy bars - there are options for a walking tour at any time of the year.

Villach has established itself as a real Paddling Town in recent years. The SUP Alps Trophy is also significantly involved in this. It has been holding the first competition weekend of the paddling season in Villach and on neighboring Lake Faak every year with the The Lake Rocks Festival (since 2022).

The Finkenstein Castle (Burgruine Finkenstein) from the 12th century is accessible free of charge and, with its coloseum it offers a unique open-air location with panoramic views over the region. In summer there are weekly concerts, cabarets and other events here. You can also combine the great view with a good drink or a hearty meal in the Burgschenke Inn right next door.

The small organic citrus garden in Faak is open to visitors all year round as a botanical center for citrus plants. Here you can not only get to know the variety of citrus fruits on guided tours, but also take part in workshops and tastings. Once you get a taste for it, you have the opportunity to stock up on high-quality products in the shop.

The European Bike Week has been held around the lake every September since 1998. With over 70,000 bikes, it is the largest Harley Davidson and custom bike festival in Europe and attracts hundreds of thousands of Harley and motorcycle fans. The entire lake is then declared Harleywood for one week.

Extra Tips

No SUP, no problem! Click&Paddle operates three self-service machine located around Villach (Lake Faak and Lake Ossiach). They are equipped with Croslake SUP boards and you can book these online. The popular reed belt on the western shore of the lake is one of the most beautiful places in Carinthia and is a true natural jewel. Although it is no longer an insider tip, it is always worth paddling through the waterway in the reeds.

The Tabor is a small mountain rising above the east shore of Lake Faaker See. You can reach its peak called Taborhöhe, 710 m above sea level, either on foot or by car and enjoy a panoramic view of the lake and the Gailtal Valley at any time of day or year. Hunger and thirst are quenched in the Taborhütte bar, while the thirst for adventure is quenched in the forest rope park.

If you want to go even higher and at the same time admire Carinthia, Slovenia and Italy from above, the Karavanks mountains are highly recommended. Mountain tours to the Mallestiger Mittagskogel, the Schwarzkogel, the Mittagskogel or the Ferlacher Spitz are strenuous and more suitable for seasoned mountaineers, but the effort of the climb is worth it once you see the panoramic views over the Alpe-Adria-Region.

If you want to stock up on regional food and beverages, there are plenty of options every Thursday evening between May and September. The Faaker Farmers' Market (Faaker Bauernmarkt) has been a weekly fixture and popular meeting place in the region for decades.
