Paddleboarding

Maribor is a city by the water, expanding on both sides of the Drava River. It flows from Austria to Croatia and into the Danube at the Serbian border. The Drava is dammed in the city area, forming an almost six kilometer long reservoir. Here you can enjoy some smooth paddling and watch life in the old town center from the water. Upstream there is also the island of Mariborski otok, which can of course be circled by SUP. If you want less reservoir feeling and more river action, we recommend the route from Maribor to Ptuj, which is long but fairly easy to paddle.

Unfortunately, the Lake Pernica reservoir, located just outside of Maribor, is not allowed to be navigated by SUP.

Swimming

You could swim in the Drava River in the Maribor area, but there are no official recommendations. However, there are great alternatives on land:

Worth seeing

In Maribor you can admire the oldest grapevine in the world, which is now more than 400 years old. The Old Vine House also houses its own museum of grapevines. Various events are held in honor of the Old Vine, such as the Pruning of the Old Vine, St. Martin's Day and the Old Vine Festival.

The Roman Catholic Franciscan Church, also called the Basilica of the Mother of Mercy, is located in the old town center of Maribor. It is hard to miss due to its architectural features, both from the outside with its red brick building and from the inside with its graceful floor tiles and vaulted ceiling.

The Fala power plant is the oldest power plant along the river Drava and it is still in operation today. The Fala hydroelectric power station museum, which can be visited with prior reservation, is also located here.

If you want to delve deeper into the history of Maribor, you should pay a visit to the Maribor Regional Museum. It is located in the Maribor Castle and provides information about the archaeology, ethnology and cultural history of Maribor and its surroundings.

Extra Tips

To get a first glimpse of Maribor from the water, you can take the traditional rafts on the Drava and go from Koblarjev zaliv (Koblar's Bay) to the Lent. During the journey there are different program points, a lot of entertainment and Slovenian specialties to taste.

The Piramida City HIll can be reached on foot within 30 minutes from the city park in the old town. From here you have a wonderful view over the vineyards, the city and the region.

The spacious City Park can be visited in combination with the City Hill Piramida, as they are located close to each other. The numerous ponds and fountains attract young and old alike, as do the aquarium, the terrarium and the regular Sunday concerts in the pavilion.

For all wine lovers, a guided tour of the largest wine cellar in Slovenias is highly recommended. It includes wine tasting and a lot of background information about Slovenian wines. Reservation needed!

Beer lovers, on the other hand, can go on a guided tour and taste local craft beers. For foodies there are also multi-sensory city tours that introduce you to the food scene in Maribor and reveal great culinary delights.

The Lent Festival is one of Europe's largest multicultural and cross-genre summer festivals, presenting music, theater, art and folklore from all over the world. Every summer, thousands of visitors enjoy the diverse artistic performances throughout the city and celebrate the climax of the festival with a colorful parade through the old town.
