General information

Paddleboarding

You'll find many opportunities for SUP adventures around Novigrad. You have the choice between sea and bay and between canal and river. If you like paddling by the sea, the partly nested banks north and south of town offer enough space as well as larger and smaller bays. From Novigrad's banks you can also paddle towards the river Mirna and eastwards along its regulated channel until the river current makes progress impossible. Or you paddle the Mirna downstream the classic way by setting out at any point inland.

Swimming

There are seven beaches, all in the town's area and many of them with good infrastructure. To the north, the nearby bathing resorts of Mareda and Dajla complete the choice. The average water temperature is impressive all year round: in summer it is 22 – 24° C, in late autumn and spring it is still around 18° C. Even the coldest months still measure around 10° C, which means you could also dare to cool down after a winter paddling tour, as long as the notorious fall winds (Bora) don't trigger storm warnings.

There is also a great aqua park outside of town called Istralandia, which impresses with an unbelievable number of attractions.

Worth seeing

The old town with its narrow streets and colorful house facades is located on a peninsula which was only connected to the mainland in the 18th century. The foundation walls of the town center date back to the seventh century and come from various previous settlements. If you stroll aimlessly through the small town, you will inevitably come across the hanging colorful umbrellas, the still stable town walls, the picturesque window arches of the town's loggia called Belvedere and the bell tower of the parish church of St. Pelagius.

You can climb up the bell tower during summer months and be enchanted by the view. And while you're here, you should also visit the parish church as well as the Lapidarium. The entire small town looks like an open-air museum.

During the tour along the old city port of Mandrac, a visit to the Gallerion Museum, which was founded in 2007, is a good idea. The small museum gives an insight into Croatian seafaring with its Austro-Hungarian history.

The small inland town of Buje is worth a visit. A signposted circular route leads through the narrow, winding old town, which is enthroned on a hilltop. From the fourth floor of the San Martino Tower you can enjoy a phenomenal panoramic view as far as the sea and shortly afterwards stop at the viewpoint, which is also recommended. The tower of the Church of St. Servul can also be climbed, it is even the second highest bell tower in Istria.

Extra Tips

The region around Novigrad is also known, among other things, for wine growing and its truffles. In the course of a wine tasting you can get to know the nearby Pervino winery. A day trip to the truffle region in the hinterland leaves just as deep impressions on your taste buds as a truffle hunting adventure.

In the spacious Aquapark Istralandia, just minutes outside of town, there's plenty of water fun to be had with family or friends. You can buy the day ticket online Opening hours run from May to September.

At the various festivals music fans get to listen to many different genres: Blues lovers head to the Cittanova Blues Festival, the concerts of the Istria Folk Fest bring folklore to town throughout the summer, while Live @Jazz corner connects people to jazz music.

Inland, not far from Novigrad, the Škarline Nature Park with its gorges, waterfalls and jungle flair is waiting to be explored. The waterfalls near Buzet in the middle of the truffle region and the Butori Waterfall are also ideal for day trips. However, the Trail of the 7 Waterfalls near Buzet is only suitable for experienced and sure-footed hikers.

The Cervar Porat Bay is a comfortable paddling area with calm water and little boat traffic. A circumnavigation ideally leads past the two offshore reefs and promises lasting impressions.

General information

Navigation rules

The beaches along the bay are very popular, but not overcrowded. Nevertheless, there are enough bathers in the water, give them priority. The same applies to the occasional motor boats, yachts and small ships along the route.

Dangers and risks

Although Porat Beach is wide and flat, sea urchins can always appear between the pebbles. Around the reefs the bottom is rocky and sharp-edged, getting off barefoot is not recommended, so it is best to wear bathing shoes or not get off the board at all.

In addition to the risk of foot injuries, the health of the fins is also an issue as soon as you approach the reefs. It is best to keep a distance of about ten meters so as not to hit the fins hard!

The Porat beach is demarcated with ropes for swimmers. Swimmers and SUP paddlers are to be expected within the swimming area, but also on other sections of the bank. It is therefore best to only get up on the board outside of the swimming area. Less experienced paddlers could snag their fins on the ropes and fall into the water.

Even if the bay is quite comfortable to paddle, the swell and the wind increase a little, but noticeably, towards the reefs. Of course, this requires more effort and concentration, but should also be manageable for SUP beginners.

Likewise, towards the open sea one encounters a little more boats. Foresight is given!

Directions

From the central roundabout in Poreč, drive straight north along the D75 (signs Poreč sjever, Parenzo – nord), passing three roundabouts. After driving 5.3 km, turn left at the fourth roundabout towards Cervar Porat and follow the road for 830 m towards the next roundabout where you turn right. After another 430 m at the T-junction in front of the bus stop, turn left into Bršljan Street and follow it for about 450 m to the parking lot.

You can also take the bus, which is very quick and cheap, from the bus stop in Poreč to Cervar Porat. Those who like to travel with the SUP bag on their back and by bike can also rent a bike. The route is about 7 km long and quite flat, so it is managable even with SUP equipment.

Parking

There are free parking spaces, they are located on Bršljan Street in front of the tennis courts and directly above the beach. From here you can walk to the beach or to the harbor in two minutes.

Swimming

The Cervar Porat Bay is well developed on all banks and can be explored on foot. In the south you will find the popular Porat Beach and a nudist area on the stone shore towards the open sea. The northern shore also offers nudist zones, apart from the two harbors you can go into the water everywhere.

In midsummer, the average water temperature in the region rises to up to 25° C, with pleasant bathing conditions even well into autumn.

In addition, the Aquacolors Aquapark is nearby (near Poreč). From June to September you can fully enjoy its twenty attractions on offer.

Tour

From Porat Beach turn right, go along the shore and around the bay, past the reef and back again.

From the bay to the reef - what muscle power can achieve

Between Novigrad in the north and the former Roman colony of Poreč in the south lies the unspoiled and quiet Cervat Porat Bay. Due to little boat traffic and relatively calm water, it is worth planning a circumnavigation tour here and top it off with a highlight on the open sea. About 500 m west of the bay there are two small reefs, they can easily be steered for by SUP. This is what I have planned for today as I am aiming for the free parking lot has been held at Porat Beach and back again.

From here it's a few minutes down to the beach, where you can get ready and warm up under the shades of pine trees. First you have to leave the defined swimming area behind you and overcome the limiting rope, which is floating in the water about 100 m in front of the beach. Stable paddlers quickly paddle towards the rope, survive the short jerk the touching fin triggers and are immediately on the open water. If you prefer a conservative approach, slowly approach the boundary rope and use the paddle to push it behind you under the fin.

First I paddle to the right to the nice little harbor with its 450 berths, but I don't let the names of ships like Shark Fright (aka Haischreck, the German name of one yacht) disturb me. After a small tour of the harbor I am drawn to the opposite bank, which opens up in front of the pine forests and reveals lonely pebble and rocky beaches. Anyone who settles down here to relax is usually to themselves all day long. The journey is only possible by bicycle, because there is a good network of paths through the forests, which also runs close to the coast.

My next stop is the port of Santa Marina about 600 m north of me as the crow flies. To reach it, I paddle to the right around the forest and the stone coast and am there in a few minutes. On the recently built quay, dozens of seagulls are making themselves comfortable in the morning sun and staring contentedly into the distance. Unfortunately, this satisfaction evaporates when I arrive, because the birds flap their wings to fly away over me towards the sea.

That's where I'm drawn to as well, because I believe to see the Reef Solaris already there far out on the sea. About two kilometers in front of me there are tower or tube-shaped metal structures in the water. As a layman I assume that these serve as markings so that boats and ships keep a sufficient distance from the reef. That's where the fishing boat in front of me comes in handy. I paddle up to the old cutter and ask the duo working on it – apparently father and son – if they know anything about the reef. They deny my question while shooting each other questioning looks. In return, they show me their freshly caught mussels, which are still to be sold today.

Then I paddle up to Beach Vabriga and work my way along the shore to the open sea. On the way there the wind increases significantly, but remains quite weak at 1-2 Bf, which is still pleasant to paddle. Of course, the wind also ruffles the surface of the water, which initially slows things down a bit. When I align myself with the nose towards the northern reef, a corridor about twenty meters wide and several hundred meters long opens up to me, which surprisingly shows no wind sea.

Smooth water in the gently churning sea all around, like a paved road through rough terrain. I am now certain that the metal towers out there mark the reefs, and so I paddle through the smooth-water corridor in front of me almost without resistance.

The sea pushes gentle and long drawn out waves against me from the front, and within minutes I already see the ring of turquoise water taking shape around the first reef. A private small boat is still out here with me, the fishing rods are hanging in the water. Otherwise there is nothing here but my board, me and the relaxing sounds of the sea.

The seagulls, who can stand undisturbed on the rocks on the reef, also know this, because paddlers have to keep a certain safety distance, especially since the bottom is rugged and sharp-edged and can therefore cause sensitive scratches to any board. The clear water gives me a detailed view of the subsoil and so I almost reverently circumnavigate the small rocky outcrop in front of Cervar Porat Bay.

I also paddle onto the reef to the south, which is about 500 m away, and after a few more photos I orient myself towards the mainland again. The swell is no longer coming at me head-on, but the waves are pushing me from behind. I surrender to their rhythm and then adjust my paddle strokes until I am comfortably carried back into the bay past the nudist beach on my right.

Now the wind and waves are quickly decreasing and I cruise towards the entry point, where my family is already working on their sunburn in the water. The beach has now filled up and domestic and foreign families enjoy the relaxed atmosphere by the water.

You could treat yourself to a rewarding snack right here on the beach, but I prefer to drive down to Poreč to be spoiled with culinary delights at L'insolito in the middle of the old town.

General information

Paddleboarding

Poreč only has the sea to offer stand-up paddlers, but in a varied manner. Like the entire Istrian coast, the rugged stretches of coast around Poreč also offer many picturesque and romantic bays, such as Červar Porat Bay in the north. South of town, however, you will find countless tiny and uninhabited islands just a few hundred meters from the coast, which are ideal for island hopping. Finally, there is the inviting old town with the offshore island of Sveti Nikola - both of which are worth a SUP ride.

Swimming

As in almost all bathing resorts on the Istrian Riviera (west coast of Istria), you can swim comfortably here from May to October and, to a lesser extent, also in the months before and after. Especially around the turn of the year, however, the Bora with its extreme weather can make it impossible to stay outdoors. Midsummer water temperatures, on the other hand, average up to 25°C.

Around the town center you will find a lot of nice bathing opportunities. But if you prefer something unusual, take the ferry or a taxi boat to the offshore island of Sveti Nikola and enjoy one of its great beaches. Paddlers can do without public water transport companies and paddle to the popular island themselves in just a few minutes.

Of course, it is also worth mentioning that the Blue Flag flies on most beaches as a sign of excellent water quality and high environmental standards.

There is also the Aquacolors aquapark, which claims to be the largest aqua park in Croatia. From June to September you can fully enjoy the twenty attractions on offer.

Worth seeing

In the enchanting old town of Poreč you walk on ancient traces, because the symmetrical street arrangement and the layout of the city already indicate that it was once part of the Roman Empire.

Recommendable buildings are the Euphrasian basilica, the Roman forum with the Neptune temple, Zuccatto palace, the town hall, the romanesque and gothic houses and the various towers.

Anyone who has always wanted to see dolphins can take a dolphin sightseeing tour on the boat from Poreč, because many of these marine mammals cavort in the region. In addition to day trips, two-hour evening tours are also offered.

Extra Tips

A little to the north-east, not far from Cervar Porat Bay, is the popular Baredine Cave. The tour of the five rooms of the cave offers the ideal replacement program on rainy days. From Poreč there is also the possibility of a transfer from the accommodation including a tour and wine tasting.

Istria is known for its wines and its hearty olive oil. If you want to experience and taste these culinary delicacies, you can explore the hinterland of Poreč either on your own or as part of a guided tour.

The Aquacolors water park is just a few minutes outside of the center and offers plenty of attractions and endless water fun for all ages. The day ticket can also be reserved online.

The local craft beer brewery Bura Brew produces wonderfully full-bodied beers, which are sold in and around Poreč. During a tour of the brewery, you can stock up on the noble brew at reasonable prices.

Anyone who would like to provide themselves with regional and seasonal groceries can do so daily at the market which is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Needless to say that it is also a popular social meeting place.

You can also explore the water and the coast with professional guides and join a guided SUP tour. Terra Magica Adventures will give you an unforgettable experience. Kayak trips to the Lim Bay Protected Area and sunset kayak tours are also possible to start from Poreč.

THE SUP WEEK offers a week full of adventures on the Croatian sea, with dreamy SUP-Faris in the middle of beautiful islands, breathtaking sunsets, trips to beautiful port towns and secluded bays. Contact us and request your personal discount voucher of 5% on your next booking!

Hiking around the Zarecki Krov waterfall and through the Pazin canyon lasts about three hours and offers an impressive and varied nature experience away from the coast.

Lanterna Bay can be easily explored from the tranquil and historically significant holiday resort of Novigrad. The tour south of town combines the safety of paddling near the shore with a homeopathic dose of open-sea paddling.

General information

Navigation rules

The beaches around Novigrad are very popular and accordingly there are enough swimmers in the water - they have to be avoided and given priority. The same applies to the motor boats, yachts and taxi boats along the route. Ships are not to be expected, but of course they have priority.

Dangers and risks

The small Karpinjan Beach is walled towards the marina so that the water is thrown back into the sea along the vertical walls. When there are waves, you should rather use the pebble beach to the west.

Here and along the town wall there are more than enough bathers and also some paddlers in the water, so start carefully and kneel so as not to endanger anyone! Also along Lanterna Bay, which is a veritable holiday resort full of hotels, you should be prepared for many bathers.

Along the town wall, the water level in the area of the walled bathing areas is sometimes very low. If you paddle too close, you risk falling into the water and possibly onto the sharp-edged rock below.

Around the lighthouse, along the mole and the town wall of Novigrad, keep a safe distance, because here too the waves can push paddlers against the barriers and the stony seabed is not very deep. This also applies to paddling along Lanterna Bay. Wearing shoes is an advantage here.

There is sometimes a lot of traffic in the water along the entire route - especially near the new port (mainly boats and yachts). Boat waves can severely challenge balance, regular scanning the surroundings is required.

Of course, the open sea also has its typical dangers here and should therefore only be crossed by experienced paddlers. It is advisable to have a buoyancy aid with you and, if possible, do not to paddle alone!

Directions

From the centrally located roundabout at the Plodine supermarket, drive the D75 northwest towards Umag, pass two more roundabouts in quick succession and turn left towards Karpinjan Beach after 120 m (into Kastanija Street, along the harbour). Shortly before the tennis courts there is a paid parking lot on the left (0.7 € per hour/as of 2023), at the last tennis courts there is a free parking lot (entrance to the Lungomare restaurant).

Public transport connections to Novigrad or at least the surrounding area can be found on Omio and Busbud. From the center you walk to the starting point of this paddle tour in decent time if you carry the SUP on your back.

Parking

On Kastanija Street, shortly before the tennis courts there is a paid parking lot on the left (€0.7 per hour/as of 2023), at the last tennis courts there is a free parking lot (entrance to the restaurant Lungomare). From both parking lots you reach the beach in one minute.

Swimming

Novigrad's most famous bathing beach - Karpinjan Beach - stretches north of the town's center for about 500 m in length, with the longest section being a stone and pebble beach and the shorter section consisting of concrete plateaus. The shallow shore is particularly ideal for children and the elderly, which is why it is usually very busy.

In addition to a wide range of sports facilities, bathers will also find gastronomy, sanitary facilities, parking spaces and shadowy pine trees.

The average water temperature is impressive all year round: in summer it is 22 – 24° C, in late autumn and spring it is still around 18° C. Even the coldest months still measure around 10° C, which means you could also dare to cool down after a winter paddling tour, as long as the notorious fall winds (Bora) do not trigger storm warnings.

Up and down over the water

The historic Novigrad trumps primarily with its nice old town and the countless bathing opportunities in and around the small Istrian town. Of course, there are always paddlers frolicking around in the demarcated swimming zones near the shore. But paddling only gets really interesting when you venture a little further out to sea.

Excellent opportunities to start SUP tours can be found on the popular Karpinjan beach north of the town's center. Fortunately, there is a free car park in front of the restaurant Lungomare and a fairly cheap car park about 150 m away. From both parking lots you walk through the spacious park full of pine trees to reach the water. Like all water accesses in the town area, this beach is also largely walled and easily accessible via stairs.

As soon as I get on my board, I realize that the forthcoming paddle tour will demand a lot from me, when waves coming in from the side almost throw me back into the water. Absolutely safe footing and experience in sea paddling are not only an advantage here, but a prerequisite if you want to enjoy the following seven kilometers and be back in a reasonable time - at least during the high tide, which starts in the late afternoon.

Although the Bay, in which the harbor is located, is quite sheltered from the wind and the light waves are easy to calculate, there is regular ship and boat traffic here. If you don't start directly at the gravel beach, but at one of the walled water accesses, you have to reckon with strong waves sloshing back. So always paddle away from the bank structures kneeling before you get up

The advantage of the light breeze blowing against me is that it gives me the subjective feeling of paddling faster than I actually do. Despite it, I reach the lighthouse in Novigrad after a few minutes and find myself in a pleasantly swaying swell. The lighthouse is located at the head of a mole, the inside of which serves as a berth for yachts and boats and can be accessed on foot. A little beyond there is the small port called Mandrac, which once served as the town's only port. Meanwhile, behind it - between the beach and the town center - is the new and larger main harbor with about 400 modern parking spaces for yachts and boats.

Now it's off to the open water, where I initially keep a distance of at least ten meters from the mole so as not to be pushed onto the wave-breaking rocks. After all, I'm now dealing with somewhat stronger waves and an estimated two Beaufort winds from the west. This means that the wind strength is in the pleasant annual average and the sea remains paddleable, even if it requires a lot of concentration and coordination on the SUP.

Balancing the waves requires enormous leg and hip strength, so I paddle along Novigrad's promenade and past the historic town wall with high muscle tension. However, my distance to the old town is increasing, because I orient myself at the opposite end of the extensive Lanterna Bay, which lies about two kilometers south of town.

I paddle mostly on my own and can fully concentrate on the waves, which give me a rollercoaster ride full of fun, as long as I can catch the waves properly and follow their rhythm. Then it goes up and down between crest and valley in pleasant intervals, whereby I paddle portside in short strokes in order to ride the waves as long as possible. It's tedious, but just as entertaining.

In addition, I only encounter the taxi boat here, which runs back and forth between Novigrad and Lanterna every hour. From time to time I stop and enjoy the silence around me while I look after the ships on the horizon and leisurely rocking up and down. The view of the mainland, on the other hand, reveals a clear view of the blue-painted Mirna Bridge, which crosses the river of the same name. It is almost six kilometers to get there and one day I will also paddle towards this River and further.

Just before I reach the mainland on the other side, I watch a jet ski driver doing his rounds vigorously in front of me, giving me an extra boost of waves. This is not surprising, especially since the next jet ski rental is not far away.

A little later I'm paddling along the shore line of the spacious holiday resorts of Valmar, probably the largest and highest quality provider of holiday services and facilities in Croatia. At first the shore is still rocky and offers a number of hidden berths, but after a few hundred meters I'm amazed when I suddenly see a sandy beach in front of me. Lanterna Beach is also part of the huge Valmar complex and was artificially raised, but it is still beautiful to look at.

In the area of the aqua park I start the way back and set my SUP back towards Novigrad. In the meantime the wind has shifted a bit and after a few minutes I'm perfectly positioned on the board so that I can fully enjoy a downwinder. The side-lapping waves require skill and peripheral vision, but I can now paddle more distance with fewer strokes. You float over the waves with incredible ease when you need about a third less effort.

Novigrad with its distinctive bell tower, which looks very similar to the Campanile of San Marco in Venice, is getting closer and I am heading towards the middle of the peninsula that forms the old town center.

About 130 m in front of the brick shore with its countless breakwaters, I break through the limitation of the swimming area. It's best to look for anchorages of the ropes, because that's where they're pulled down a bit into the water and fixed to the bottom, so you can glide over them without fin contact. In the early evening most people are drawn back to the old town or to their accommodations. Nevertheless, the promenade is lively and people eagerly pose at the stone viewing house Belvedere to snap a souvenir photo with sea view.

Along the fully intact wall from the 13th century, a little caution is required going towards the mole if you paddle close to the shore. First of all, the water level is barely lower than one to two meters in several places, which can lead to a hard landing on the jagged rocks if you fall. You can see the shallow areas well by the light coloring on the satellite image. On the other hand, the waves can cause paddlers to drift too close to the bricked shore, especially at high tide. Still, there is ample opportunity to examine the town's wall more closely, which Novigrad owes to being a member of the WTFC (Walled Towns Friendship Circle).

After about two hours I turn right again at the lighthouse and let the wind and waves gently push me back to shore. A wonderful and technically varied ride ends here in the bay in front of Karpinjan Beach. It won't be the last, as there are still some interesting routes to explore around here.
