Paddleboarding
Of course, Vienna scores primarily with the Danube and the Old Danube - both are great paddling areas and pretty busy on nice summer days. A almost two kilometer long canal runs parallel to the Danube and also flows into it - the Kuchelauer Hafen. The 17 kilometer long Marchfeld Canal leads from Vienna out into the Marchfeld region and offers a fabulous urban-rural mix. There are also smaller, mostly artificial bodies of water such as the Schillerwasser, the Mühlwasser or the Seestadt. Everyone should decide for themselves whether they turn out to be a great paddling experience.
Swimming
As a city on the water, Vienna offers countless bathing opportunities. The Gänsehäufel public bath on the Old Danube is Vienna's top address when it comes to bathing in nature. But besides the Old Danube there are numerous others possibilities to enjoy and relax in the water.
If it is too cold to swim outside, you can always take a dip in the Therme Wien Spa or in the Golden Tree Spa (Hotel Mariott) downtown.
Worth seeing
It's impossible to do a best-of of Viennese sights because there are just too many of them. Regardless of whether you visit the Schönbrunn Palace, the Stephansdom Cathedral, the Prater or the Danube Island. Vienna has something to offer for every taste.
All over the world the metropolis is also known for its rich history of classical music and the many theaters scattered all across the city.
Extra Tips
The Danube Island Festival (Donauinsel Fest) attracts 2.5 million visitors over a weekend and offers a unique music program on eleven stages featuring local and international stars.
The 21 km long Danube Island (Donauinsel) was created from the excavated material for the discharge channel of the New Danube (Neue Donau), which was built for flood protection. Today, this artificial island is of course also Vienna's largest local recreation area.
The small Naschmarkt is a big playground for foodies. Whether local or international food and gastronomy, here every taste bud is guaranteed to be properly served.
Every year at the end of July the Festival of Lights (Lichterfest) takes place on the Old Danube. For the party on the water, the entire area is transformed into a holiday location thanks to decorated boats and bars. You can also watch the fireworks from the SUP on the water.
The Spanish Riding School is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is also worth a visit apart from its main program. Almost every morning you can watch the training of the Lipizzaner stallions and, so to speak, get a back-stage insight into the daily work with the renownd horses.
If you don't have your own SUP with you, you can rent one from countless rental stations. There are also several opportunities to take part in guided kayak tours. If all this is too exhausting for you, switch to yachts or ships instead.
Enjoy whitewater action along the 250 m long artificial white water route of the Vienna Watersports Arena on the Danube Island. Not only are international competitions held here, you can also go SUPing, rafting, kayaking and whitewater swimming.
