Paddleboarding

As the country’s westernmost town, Szentgotthárd is also Hungary’s westernmost SUP spot. The small town is situated where the rivers Raab and Lafnitz meet. Both are very pleasant and relatively easy to navigate. But you should always check the water level beforehand, as it is often too low for paddling. Coming from Austria, you can SUP across both rivers to Szentgotthárd, or from here, paddle down the Raab to Győr and on to the Danube.

The small Lake Hársas is located in the Máriaújfalu district of Szentgotthárd, not far from Őrség National Park, and was created in the late 1980s by damming the Hársas Stream. Unfortunately, only fishing and swimming are permitted there; all watercraft are prohibited.

Swimming

Despite their calm waters, the Lafnitz and Raab aren’t really suitable for swimming or bathing. However, there is the idyllic little Lake Hársas, just a few kilometers southeast of the town's center. It is part of a popular recreational area and offers a natural swimming experience. Aside from a snack stand, there is no significant infrastructure around the reservoir.

On the other hand, the Szentgotthárd Spa offers year-round water fun and relaxation with a host of amenities.

Worth seeing

The Styrian House was originally built as a workers' home (1902) and has been a museum since 1983. Today the Museum of Homeland and Slovene Nationalities Pável Ágoston consists of several collections and is open all year round.

Szentgotthárd Abbey dates back to the 12th century, and part of its premises — the Cistercian rooms — now serves as the town hall. The former dining hall on the ground floor, on the other hand, is used as a concert hall and wedding venue.

Extra Tips

The Nature Park Raab spans Austria, Hungary, and Slovenia and offers a wide range of activities for athletes and nature lovers alike. The region also regularly hosts cultural and educational events.

The Őrség National Park protects one of Central Europe’s last remaining unspoiled, rolling woodlands and its traditional villages. It is known for its rich biodiversity and well-preserved cultural landscape, far from the crowds of mass tourism.

In Szentgotthárd, there is an educational trail located near the Cistercian church and the monastery complex. Along the trail, seven slanted information panels shaped like an open book provide visitors with insight into the former life of the Cistercians.
