General information

Paddleboarding

In southern Styria you can only experience extended paddling tours on rivers. Unfortunately the countless gravel ponds and small swimming lakes are unsuitable for this. Of course, the Mur River., Styria's lifeline, dominates the paddling range. It allows for different levels of difficulty between paddling on a reservoir up to whitewater level 2 (going south from Spielfeld). However, different sections of the rivers Sulm and Lassnitz are more comfortable to paddle, provided the water levels allow it.

Swimming

In the summer the Mur River. is pleasantly warm and you can enter the water from many places in dammed areas. However, swimming and bathing is prohibited in the area of the power plants.

Also the Sulm invites you to swim in suitable places. The Sulmbad river bath is located directly by the river and is always good for a wonderful cooling off in nature.

Besides rivers there are a lot of great bathing opportunities, especially the Soboth Reservoir is also worth mentioning as a paddling territory.

In the cold season the two spas Parktherme Bad Radkersburg as well as the Therme Bad Gleichenberg are popular alternatives to the outdoor bathing fun.

Worth seeing

The Ship Mill in Mureck is not just a small museum, but the only floating and functioning mill in Central Europe built traditionally. Although today's mill was faithfully reproduced in 1997, that does not diminish the impression it leaves on its visitors (admission € 2, as of 2022). Right next door you can stop off at the cozy Mühlenhof restaurant.

Near the municipality of Wagna you can admire the Roman Quarry Aflenz, the oldest and still active mine in Austria. The mining business was reopend in the late 1980s, and today the quarry is also a show mine as well as an event location.

Dating from the 13th century, the Seggau Castle today includes a modern event and seminar center and also welcomes holiday guests as it is a popular destination. For example, the more than 300-year-old wine cellar including wine tasting or the "Seggauer Liesl" can be visited. Of course there are also castle tours offered.

Southern Styria offers interested visitors dozens of museums and galleries, which reflect the entire range of regional life.

Not only the hilly landscape and the vineyards are worth seeing, the friendly towns and villages invite you to stroll, taste and enjoy. The towns of Leibnitz and Deutschlandsberg are just as friendly as the villages of Leutschach, Ehrenhausen and Gamlitz.

Extra Tips

The last remaining Mur ferry in Weitensfeld on the Mur was originally intended to transport "30 people, 7 head of cattle or a loaded agricultural vehicle" across the Mur to the other bank of the river. Today it is mainly cyclists, hikers and walkers who treat themselves to this curious and free crossing with the roller ferry every day. Take your passport with you, because the state border runs right in the middle of the Mur and there are regular controls on the Austrian side. At both piers there is a nice rest stop (Zur Hittn, Okrepcevalnica Brod).

Directly at the Slovenian border you can cross the curious Herzerl Street going south. However, its heart shape, pointing west, can only be seen from the very top when looking from the viewing platform of the winemaker Dreisiebner looking south over the vineyards.

The 27.5 m high Mur Tower is located on a renatured section of the Mur east of Mureck and offers a great overview of the river and the adjacent alluvial forest. The ascent leads over several forest levels and thus gives deeper insights into the ecology of the forest.

Also the Weinwarte in St. Peter am Ottersbach is 28 m high and shaped like a wine glass. Symbolically, it naturally fits perfectly into the Southeast Styrian Hill Country Wine Route and is the starting point for many hiking routes.

Recognized throughout Europe, the wine region Southern Styria not only offers countless culinary and vinophile events. Worth mentioning is, for example, the big autumn festival with its Thanksgiving parade in Leibnitz. Also worth mentioning are the wine parades in Gamlitz or Leutschach as well as the wine spring in Castle Stainz. The winegrowers of the region are also looking forward to a visit and offer personal advice and wines at top prices.

The Motor skills park Gamlitz is Europe's largest motor skills park and along 41 exercise stations it challenges the coordination and motor skills of its visitors in an entertaining way.

Friends of down-to-earth beer culture will find real natural products in the Leutschach Brewery, because the beer brewed here in small quantities contains no preservatives and thrives on high-quality regional brewing ingredients. No matter if you take a brewery tour, attend brewing seminars or other seasonal events, the brewery and its beer creations are highly recommended.
