Paddleboarding
The Dolomites include the Italian regions of Veneto and Trentino Alto Adige. Of course, the Dolomites are known for their rugged mountain peaks and alpine landscapes that seem to be from another world. However, between the imposing rock formations there are countless small and medium-sized lakes and reservoirs that can also be paddled. In the area of the Sexten Dolomites, for example, there are Lake Misurina, Lake Dürren and Lake Auronzo. They are all surrounded by wild, romantic rock massifs and their water, usually only a few meters deep, is bursting with turquoise and green hues that would make any jeweler jealous. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to use private watercraft on Lake Toblach, so SUPing is also prohibited there.
Swimming
There are also plenty of swimming opportunities between and on the mountains of the Sexten Dolomites. In addition to the SUP areas mentioned above, when hiking or driving through the region you will often come across very small lakes, mostly unsuitable for paddling but all the more romantic for cooling off. However, be prepared for significantly cooler water than in the lowlands.
In addition, there are beautiful thermal baths in the region, which guarantee relaxing hours in the water even in the cold season.

Worth seeing
The Three Peaks are probably the most famous mountain peaks in the Dolomites and, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, they are also the symbol of the Dolomites region. They are part of the Three Peaks Nature Park and, thanks to the toll road, you can drive to the Auronzo Hut to explore various hiking trails from there (only for experienced mountaineers). However, you have to set off extremely early; sometimes the road is closed as early as nine o'clock because there are no more free parking spaces at the top of the mountain.
An alpine curiosity and also a symbol of the region is the Sesto Sundial. It is a series of numbered mountain peaks functioning like a sundial, with the sun lying exactly over their peaks at certain times. The best place to observe this spectacle is from the Sesto district of Moos.
An equally impressive alternative to the Three Peaks is a hike to the Fonda Savio Hut. Parking is free and you enjoy unforgettable views of the shimmering red Mt. Dürrenstein and, of course, the Three Peaks. The Kaiserschmarren and the cheese omelette at the hut are highly recommended.
Starting from Toblach aka Dobbiaco, the beautiful Valle di Landro Valley stretches about 15 km to the south and has a lot to offer both summer and winter holidaymakers. Although you are not allowed to paddle on Lake Dobbiaco, it is worth a walk at any time of year. Lake Landro is a tiny SUP area with an impressive mountain backdrop. In winter, the entire valley becomes a cross-country ski trail all the way to the ski resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo.
There are also several interesting museums in the region, such as the open-air museum in Sexten and the Dolomythos Museum in Innichen.

Extra Tips
The Drei Zinnen show dairy (Three Peaks show dairy) in Dobbiaco not only offers great dairy products from its own production, but also interesting tours of the company in several languages. During the one-hour tour, you will learn a lot about the regional dairy industry and various ways to process milk.
In honor of the great Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, who composed his last orchestral works in Dobbiaco between 1908 and 1910, the top-class Gustav Mahler Music Weeks have been held every year in July since 1981. Other interesting events in and around Dobbiaco can be found in the current events calendar.
The Lake Dobbico nature trail includes eleven information boards on a variety of topics and leads from the Nordic Arena in Dobbiaco to the lake and around it. If the 8 km route is too long for you, take a shortcut and simply stroll around the lake for an hour (4.5 km). In addition to the enchanting mountain scenery, you will also discover great viewpoints and one of the few wetlands in the Alps.
The WoodWonderWorld and the Tree Village are primarily play and learning places for children who want to learn about the importance of forests in an entertaining way. Both can be reached via a forest adventure trail and are free to enter.
Dobbiaco's drinking water comes from two high-quality springs. One rises from the limestone of the Dolomites and the other from the iron-rich rocks of the Central Alps. Both waters can be drawn and tasted from the Two Waters Fountain (Zweiwasserbrunnen).
The Drava has its source near Dobbiaco. It flows through five countries along its 750 km through Europe and is a wonderful SUP river. The source of the Drava is somewhat hidden in the forest and it is still an inconspicuous stream here; a relaxed walk there is definitely worth it.
