Paddleboarding
Since Pörtschach is located almost exactly in the middle of Lake Wörthersee, the town is an ideal starting point for SUP tours in almost all directions. The peninsula divides the local paddling area into a western and an eastern basin, whereby the paddling ban around the promenade pool (Promenadebad) and the ban on entering the Capuchin Island (Kapuzinerinsel) to the south must be observed.
If you want to paddle to Velden in the west or Klagenfurt in the east, you will travel about eight kilometers in each direction - one way, mind you! Not only in Pörtschach, but also all around and on the opposite southern bank, you will find a lot of small, dreamy bays. Tropical water colors can be found on many sections of the shore.
Away from the hotspot of Lake Wörthersee, the Moosburg Ponds (Moosburger Teiche) are located north of Pörtschach. As a landscape conservation area, they are very popular among bathers and invite you to a dreamy, short paddling tour in the middle of the forest.
Swimming
With water temperatures of up to 28° C, Lake Wörthersee is probably the most popular bathtub in the state. That's why it's heavily built up, but also has a number of free lake accesses. The Metnitz Beach in Klagenfurt, the Edelweiss outdoor pools in Pörtschach, the Teixlbucht Bay near Maria Wörth and the free accesses to the lake in Krumpendorf (Kurpark, Berthastraße, Strandweg among others) are worth mentioning. However, if you are looking for more infrastructure, you are spoiled for choice with the countless beaches around the lake. In Velden you find the following:
In Pörtschach you either have a private lake access via your holiday accommodation or you can go to the public pool (Promenadenbad, Werzers Badehaus). However, many people also enjoy the free lake accesses in the surrounding area. The shore is shallow, especially on the peninsula, and the earthy ground is pleasant to walk on barefoot. Even promenaders come to this area for swimming, although signs indicate that it is prohibited.

Worth seeing
Pörtschach is worth a stroll, especially during the warmer months, because along the narrow avenues and the two-kilometer-long lakeside promenade you will discover cute boathouses and magnificent villas built in the so-called Wörthersee Style. However, the town also has newer buildings that fortunately blend harmoniously into the existing townscape. A walk to the Flower Island over the long wooden footbridge is particularly recommended.
A short hike takes you past Leonstain Castle and to the Hohe Gloriette viewing point. There is not only a columned pavilion to see, but also a panorama of the entire lake with the mountains behind it.
If you like visiting ancient buildings, you can hike north of town to the Leonstein Castle ruins, visit the old Bathhouse Werzer and walk past the Villa Seehort. Or you enjoy a chilled white wine on the lakeside terrace of the Parkvilla, also known as Villa Wörth.
Mt. Pyramidenkogel with its 100 m high observation tower, watches over Lake Wörthersee, the Klagenfurt Basin and the Rosental Valley. From the world's highest wooden observation tower you can get back down using the elevator or Europe's highest building slide (52 m high).
Extra Tips
Thanks to its unique panorama, the Wörthersee Forest Rope Park offers not only balance ropes, suspension bridges and zip lines up to 13 m high from June to September, but also wonderful views over the lake. There is a children's course for the little ones, while 38 tree platforms and two flying foxes await everyone else.
Every spring the See.Ess.Spiele gourmet festival (translated as Lake.Food.Games) marks the opening of the culinary season around Lake Wörthersee. The 20 toques awarded in the Wörthersee region are showcased at a variety of events, as you can also see for yourself in some locations in Pörtschach.
Other major events such as the running event Kärnten Läuft and the European Bike Week do not stop at Pörtschach, but increase the experience of the holiday resort.
The town also has many sporting options to offer away from the water: many cycling and hiking trails lead either past Pörtschach or through the small town. Whether it's a short walk, long-distance cycling or long-distance hiking - Pörtschach has the right infrastructure for it. A special experience is the 59 km long circular hiking trail around the lake.
Anyone can take part in the annual island swim and swim around the Flower Island starting from the public bath called Promenadenbad. The 1.4 km route is completed without timekeeping and the first 150 registered participants each receive a starter bag.
September in Pörtschach is dedicated to the great composer Johannes Brahms. Every year, the top-class international Johannes Brahms Competition for piano, violin, viola and chamber music takes place as part of the Brahms Weeks Festival. Artists from all over the world compete against each other and enchant their audience.
From spring to autumn you can take a leisurely cruise across the lake on the ships of the Wörthersee Shipping Company and enjoy various themed trips. The four ships dock at the ten piers on the lake at regular intervals and also offer breakfast on board.
