There are many and varied opportunities for unforgettable SUP adventures in the region. Rivers like the Drava River, Sava or Soča provide an adrenaline rush on the water. On the other hand, things are more relaxed at the lakes and reservoirs. No matter whether Bohinj, Bled or the smaller reservoirs along the Sava, there are plenty of paddling areas to be discovered. Thanks to its waterways, also Slovenia's capital Ljubljana is a small paddling paradise with an urban character.

Upper Carniola not only boasts quarry ponds, reservoirs and mountain lakes, but also all kinds of inland lakes in the middle of a unique natural landscape. Among the most famous destinations are Lake in Bled as well as Lake Bohinj and the Soča. All areas are largely accessible free of charge, because fee-based lidos are the exception rather than the rule. Numerous bathing spots on rivers and lakes invite you to bathe, swim and relax.

Besides, Slovenia is also known for its spas and health resorts although in the Carniola and Upper Carniola region the choice is rather small.

Worth seeing

The small Savica waterfall is part of the Triglav National Park. It lies to the west behind Lake Bohinj and also feeds it as the river called Savica. It crosses the lake and leaves it named Sava Bohinjka. Admission to the well developed ascent costs 3 euros (as of 2022), the way up to the waterfall is about one kilometer long. Apart from that, the entire region is rich in larger and smaller waterfalls.

The Slovenian capital Ljubljana is worth a trip any time of the year. Good gastronomy, a wide range of cultural and sports activities as well as an enchanting old town steeped in history characterize the face of the state capital. With the Ljubljana Card you can use public transport free of charge and receive great discounts on many sights.

The cute Capital of the Slovenian Alps shouldn't be missed. Kranj, which probably is an old celtic word for hill or peak, is not only the fourth largest city in Slovenia, but as a town steeped in history it also offers a number of sights and a cute town center.

Anyone paddling down the Sava will most likely pass the nice medieval town of Radovljica. With its romantic town center the secret beekeeping and chocolate capital of the region invites you to stroll and linger with its romantic town center. Especially the small chocolate factory Radolška Čokolada and the beekeeping museum are worth a visit.

The impressive Postojna Caves with their 24 km long corridors are some of the longest show caves in Europe. Above the caves lies the unique Cave Castle Predjama, which was built into a rock face at a height of more than 100 m in the Middle Ages. You can explore both and much more in the Park Postojnska Jama southwest of the capital Ljubljana. A good way to visit the caves and the castle including transfer from Ljubljana can be found featured.

Extra Tips

Black hole kayaking near Bled. The abandoned and flooded Black Hole Tunnels can be explored by kayak during an eight-hour excursion. Equipment and the transfer are provided and the tour is easy to complete even for beginners.

The Soča Valley is probably Slovenia's largest water sports playground. The Soča, which is called Isonzo on the Italian side, offers paddlers of all levels of ability unmistakable nature experiences and probably the most beautiful interplay colors in Europe.

Those who only have little time to explore the beauty of this country are best off starting from Bled with the 7 Alpine Wonder Day Tour, which not only leads into the Soča Valley, but over the border to Italy.

The picturesque Karst poljes of Planina Polje, not far from the Postojna caves, are definitely an insider tip for paddlers. They unfold their full magic in autumn when the Unica River is flooded and the Planina polje become a lake. However, this only happens a few times a year and you have to be lucky to guess the right time to Paddleboarding this artivicial lake. But the region is also beautiful during all other seasons and worth a relaxing trip.
