Paddleboarding
Since Marano is surrounded and crossed by the waters of the lagoon, you can explore the small canals and port facilities in the town itself. However, it is much more interesting to paddle into the large lagoon. The northernmost lagoon in the Mediterranean offers extensive paddling terrain with unique nature to the south, west and east. Going straight south leads to nearby Lignano and a day's trip to the east takes you to Grado and Grado's lagoon. If you point your nose towards the west, you can paddle to the Tagliamento River and follow it to Lignano or Bibione. Nature lovers are drawn to the freely accessible Foci dello Stella Nature Reserve or the islets and reed belts around Marano. However, you should stick to the marked fairway everywhere and pay attention to the tides and shipping traffic.
Swimming
There are not many bathing options around Marano Lagunare, as apart from the beach Spiaggia San Vito all banks are built up or serve as moorings. If you do swim there, you should definitely not go too far into the water, because the canal also serves as a passage route for boat and ship traffic. In midsummer you can enjoy water with up to 28°C. San Vito beach is also an excellent starting point for SUP tours.
Otherwise, the only beaches left are those around the seaside resorts of Lignano and Bibione, which, however, require a drive of about 30 minutes.

Worth seeing
The old town of Marano Lagunare is not only located on the northernmost lagoon in the Mediterranean, it also impresses with its narrow streets, historic buildings, the fortress and the Piazza Municipale. The main square of the small town, which is spread over several islands, looks similar to St. Mark's Square in Venice. Here you will also find the 32 m high clock tower called Torre Millenaria, the symbol of Marano.
Marano's Lagoon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its unique flora and fauna and has two nature reserves - the Riserva Naturale Foci dello Stella and the Riserva Naturale Valle Canal Novo.. The lagoon can be explored on a SUP or you join an organized boat tour.
The nature reserve Valle Canal Novo is also home to the Lagoon Aquarium, which provides a detailed overview of the lagoon's main habitats. It is the ideal complement to a tour of the nature reserve. The nature reserve and the museum are open all year round for a small entrance fee.
The Museo della Laguna, on the other hand, offers free admission and insights into the history and traditions of the lagoon's way of life. Exhibitions, conferences and lectures provide information about fishing and the region's artisanal heritage. For group tours, please contact the museum in advance by email.

Extra Tips
The Campagna-Amica Market takes place every Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Piazza dello Squero. Depending on the season, you can buy freshly caught sole, squid, shrimp, sea bream and much more first hand. The old fish market called Pescaria Vecia unfortunately ceased to be the town's economic center in the 1990s and is now being revived by cultural events.
Amateur and sport fishermen even go one step further and take care of the maritime catch themselves in the Ca’ del Lovo fishing zone. It covers an area of 13 hectares and also offers horseback and bicycle excursions in the picturesque nature. The Valle Nalon Fishing Valley is the largest in the lagoon and is located in the west of Marano, but private fishing is not possible there.
Marano also likes to celebrate. For example, the traditional Festa di San Vio takes place every year in June. For centuries, processions, singing, events and good food have been enjoyed to thank Saints Vito, Modesto and Crescenza. They are the patron saints of the community and co-patrons of the old parish church.
Even more culinary delights are to be discovered every August at the cockle festival Fasolari in Festa. For days, everything revolves around the local cockles, but fried fish, sardines, calamari and scampi are also served, which can be enjoyed every evening in the lagoon with great music and a wonderful atmosphere.
